Agreed but at the rate the current ‘administration’ is tightening up on overseas workers where’s the incentive for good people to go and work in USA without wondering if they will be victimised

Honestly, this was the only reason I liked working in retail. I LOVED being able to solve a problem for a customer, especially if it made their day. The last store I worked at was a toy store for learning toys, so a lot of teachers, parents, and caretakers would come in looking for solutions for the kids they were caring for. Nothing gave me more joy than helping them find a solution and knowing that I was helping a child be better understood or helping a child learn more efficiently. Especially since a lot of those solutions were disguised as fun activities.

Now, as a dental assistant, it gives me great joy to help somebody makeover their smile. The first thing people look at is someone’s mouth, and if it isn’t right, people feel really down about themselves, but there is nothing like the moment someone gets their dentures and sees themselves in such a new and positive light. I also have a lot of patients that come from adult group homes, and some of them are just SO FUCKING PLEASANT to be around that sometimes, I almost cry when they leave. I have patients that are grown adults that don’t know how to be a sixth of as nice as they are, and it pains me that someone that isn’t as developed mentally as some of them know how to be nice to others all the time. The group home patients may be difficult to work with because they have a hard time with the process and following directions, but I can understand that, and I do my best to work with them. I never realized I felt like this, but I’d rather work with some of them than some of the people who fully know what’s going on and act like they weren’t raised right.

TL;DR The best job you can have is one that gives you fulfillment and a sense of purpose.

      • perthaussieguy

I enjoy reading your notes Amber and also having worked in retail for some 23 years after leaving school, I agree with you 🙂

        • Amber Mari

Thanks, bud. Sometimes I try to dial it back or censor myself as I can get so back into the moment that it turns into an essay, but I appreciate when you guys “feel what I’m saying” or are there for me. This is the first place on the internet I became comfortable with commenting, and is still the only place because of friends like you!

            Hugzzzzzzzzzzzz

It doesn’t have to be in retail. I work in Clinical Engineering and my job can pretty much be summed up by ‘problem sloving’. My day might go anywhere from teaching a CPR class so clinicians can continue to treat patients, to re-configuring a patient monitoring network. It is never about the scope of what you do, it is about the attitude that takes someone else’s complicated life and making it a bit easier. Personally I think the world needs more of that.

    • RaddClaw

In case nobody told you this today, you’re an awesome person Amber 🙂

      • Amber Mari

And you’re totally Radd! Thanks! I needed that today after a patient started my day by threatening me and my staff with bringing her son in with her to barge in about some bullshit.

Did you know that Scotland offers incentives for those with computer science degrees to move to their country? I found that out a few months ago… Anywho, my first class in computer science went well, I got a B.
