You do know cats don’t speak human right?

    • Shibuya

but just like most animals (including humans) if you use a certain voice or posture, it is understood that you like or dislike something.

      • RC

That’s a response to conditioning and reading emotions. That’s not understanding speech.
Teaching and animal is not the same as telling an animal.

        • Shibuya

yes. and it has been conditioned to know it should not do that, so when it see (i assume her) looking it goes o shit ive been had and books it

          • RC

Which isn’t the same as just telling them.

I’ve taught my cats any number fo things over the years, mostly to not do something and over time they’d gotten the message

      • RC

        That’s conditioning…not telling them.

        • lizziesmama

But isn’t telling someone something a conditioning in itself?

          • The People’s Poet

I think it has to do with the level of understanding.

          • lizziesmama

OK, let’s say I move to a foreign country where I don’t know the language. Certain phrases and words are repeated to me in certain ways that I learn that I am supposed to act in a certain way – but not necessarily how it translates into the language I know. Wouldn’t that be conditioning?

          • RC

No…because it there’s a lack of positive or negative reinforcement.
Plus you can pick up on tonal inflections and subtle non verbal indications recognised from one human to another…non humans don’t pick up on all those those. Granted they detect some but not all.

          • The People’s Poet

However, and contrary to the “humans are stupid” thing, humans are a lot smarter than a cat.

As for the different language thing, eventually you will learn what those words mean by association.

I.E: You hear Ná qǐ bāo every day, and they point to a bag on the ground until you pick it up and follow them. Eventually you will learn that it means pick up the bag.

No cos conditioning has to be reinforced with either positive or negative reaction. For example giving a treat or bopping the nose.
It conditions the animal to expect a treat for good behaviour or a bopp for bad behaviour upon doing the action.

Telling them does jack cos tjey don’t speak human.

          • lizziesmama

But if you say the same thing in a different language to me I’ll figure out what I’m supposed to do by what you said and previous experiences. Not necessarily what you said.

            chọrọ nzọ?

    • Rev. Analbumcover

I had one that could understand human speech.

      • Carlos the Dwarf

And proceeded to ignore you out of spite?

        • Rev. Analbumcover

He never ignored me. He came when I called, greeted me at the door when I got home, and taught himself to fetch. He was the best friend I’ve ever had.

Like one of ours when we leave the kitchen door open…
