With a little luck you’re gonna be one of them someday, and the next, and the next …

I know there are many on here, like me, who have had lots of needles over the years. Some nurses have ‘the knack’ and some don’t. Like putting in IV’s. I have larger than average veins but still one of two stuff it up. I do take into account newbies 🙂 I make allowances for them.

Thankfully immunizations are pretty easy to give nearly painlessly. Muscle shots are fast and people should barely feel it. IVs are a different story. I may be good at placing them on difficult patients, but making them painless or mostly painless is not always easy. One of the best ways to make them not hurt as badly is to actually watch the insertion. A lot of what causes people to feel more pain is the anxiety from anticipating the pain. That anticipation makes the nerves perk up practically making it hurt more than it should. Being a hard stick, do your veins roll? Big veins can be deceiving like that.

You are quite right. Some nurses have had difficulty with my veins ‘rolling’ 🙂

I donate plasma every two weeks. . Luckily both my left and right arm veins are pretty good and easy to find/insert etc. but I ALWAYS watch the needle go in. . No problem.
As for injections in the arm, I try and relax the shoulder and arm muscles completely, so it’s not tense and bunched up when they put the needle in. . I believe it makes it less painful (not that it’s all that painful anyway). . Anyway, maybe it makes no difference, but that’s what I do.
